New lap record at Northern Roll Lancaster

Records were broken at the third event in the Northern Roll roller ski series.

After the first two events organised in Preston and Leeds by the Manchester Cross Country Ski Club and Yorkshire Dales Cross Country Ski Club respectively, it was the turn on 6 July of Lakeland Cross Country Ski Club’s event at the Salt Ayre Cycle Circuit, Lancaster.

The fourth and final event of the series will be hosted by Tyneside Loipers in Hartlepool on 17 August.

Each event follows a simple format – roller ski as many laps of the cycle circuit as you can in one hour.

And the series winners are those with the greatest distance skied across the events.

Gregor Fijalkowski

In hot conditions, Gregor Fijalkowski from Cairngorm Biathlon and Nordic Ski Club clocked up 22 laps in the hour, and was a tantalizing one second - or roughly four metres – away from being able to start a 23rd lap.

The previous record was 21 laps – and has stood since 2009 when achieved by Rob Dorward of London Hyde Park Cross Country Ski Club (now London Cross-Country Ski Club).

Ed Prentice from Yorkshire Dales Cross Country Ski Club came in second overall (and first junior) with 19 laps. First Senior Female was Beata Nowak of Cairngorm Biathlon and Nordic Ski Club with 16 laps.

Series totals

Across the three events of the series, Piotr Kepa of Manchester Cross Country Ski Club is leading the Senior Open category with a total distance skied of 51.10km - while Manchester’s Alison Pawley is currently first Senior Female with 49.5km. Ed Prentice is leading the Junior Open category with 39.75km.

Beata Nowak

And with one event remaining, and several challengers competing at the top of the leaderboard, there could be change.

Roll on the next event…
